Customs and beliefs of Tamil community wedding

As we told earlier that the rituals vary from one sub-community to other still there are few most common and famous rituals which we are going to talk about here -

Pre-wedding rituals

Nakshatra Porutham -

Just like other south Indian weddings Tamilians too give a lot of importance to horoscope matching. Once the families like each other the priest matches the horoscope of the girl and tell if they can get married or not. Also the wedding date and muhurtham are decided by the horoscope matching only. When the horoscopes are matched both families exchange fruits, sweets and gifts for the couple to officiate the alliance.

Panda Kaal muhurtham -

Both families together perform a pooja at their home or at a temple and take blessings from God so that the wedding ceremonies will be completed without any difficulties. It denotes the start of the marriage customs. This service happens a day preceding the wedding capacity. During this custom, both the Tamil young ladies and Tamil young men family appeal to God for a quiet and continuous wedding service. It might occur at the husband to be's home or any sanctuary.

Sumangali Parthanai -

Married women in odd numbers gather for a pooja. Later when the wedding ceremonies start, these women take part in them to direct the rituals. The bride takes their blessings at the end and offers them sweets and gifts. Traditional Madasari saree is the compulsory attire for this pooja.

Pallikal Thellichal -

Odd number of sumangalis decorate pots with sandalwood paste and vermilion with 9 different grains and curd in each of the pot and then keep them in any room of the house. A traditional Tamil sand art which is called kolam is made at a place which brings good luck. The ritual takes place on both sides of families. A heavenly supplication for wedded ladies: The term sumangali demonstrates to ladies who are honoured with an amicable and upbeat wedded life. All the sumangalis are required to wear a customary nine-yard saree or Madisar and petitions are offered to Sumangali and the lady of the hour to look for their gifts for Happy and prosperous wedded life. After the pooja is finished, all the Sumangali are served to devour on banana leaves.

Nishchayartham -

The formal engagement ceremony in which both the groom’s family gifts dress and jewellery to the bride and same is gifted to the groom by the bride’s family. The couple then changes into those dresses for further rituals. The groom’s sister applies sandalwood and vermillion tilak to the bride and a flower garland is offered, the vice versa is performed for the groom by the bride’s brother. This is the commitment function and starts with Ganesh puja performed by the lady of the hour's family. From that point onward, the lady of the hour and husband to be should be wearing the new garments offered by their in law's family. The function is finished after the lady and lucky man trade rings within the sight of relatives, family members and companions.

Wedding Day rituals

Mangal snanam -

On the dawn of the wedding day both bride and groom are applied with a paste of sandalwood, turmeric and kumkum by the sumangalis in their respective homes. Then they are given a bath with the holy water and sent to get dressed up for the wedding. The big day starts at the beginning of the day with the use of turmeric, sandalwood, and kumkum arranged by the Sumangalis to both lady of the hour and man of the hour. After the custom, the lady of the hour/groom scrubs down in blessed water. They at that point continue to prepare for the wedding service.

Gauri pooja -

This pooja is performed by the bride. Once she is ready for the wedding she performs a pooja of goddess parvati and prays for her happy married life and leaves for the wedding venue. In the wake of preparing for wedding function, the lady of the hour offers her petitions to Goddess Gauri, who speaks to immaculateness, severity, and ethicalness.

Kashi Yatra -

When the groom and his family reach the wedding venue, the groom acts to leave the social life and take sanyas by going to Kashi. He takes a stick and umbrella and starts walking out of the venue. The bride’s father then explains to him his responsibilities towards domestic life and offers his daughter’s hand in marriage. The groom accepts the offer and returns to mandap but his umbrella is kept there till the wedding is completed. After the appearance of a man of the hour's gathering at the wedding setting and the husband to be claims to head out to Varanasi or Kashi, disavowing every single common connection to seek after strict investigations. The dad of the lady catches and educates him regarding the righteousness of local life and guarantees to give his little girl to him in marriage. The man of the hour acknowledges this proposition and comes back to the wedding scene to get hitched.

Pada pooja -

When the groom agrees to get married and returns to the mandap his feet are washed by the bride’s father with a mixture of holy water, milk and sandalwood and wiped with flowers later. After the man of the hour lands at the wedding mandap, the parents of the lady of the hour washes his feet with sacred water, sandalwood, milk, and kumkum. His feet are then cleaned dry with bloom petals.

Maalai matral -

After pada pooja the bride is brought to mandap and the couple exchanges flower garland three times. This is a fun ritual in which the relatives too take part and playfully make it difficult for them to exchange garlands. The lady of the hour is then welcomed on to the wedding mandap and the couple trade blossom festoons as an initial step of the wedding.

Oonjal -

The swing is called oonjal in Tamil. The couple sits on a swing (oonjal) which is shaken delicately. The ladies of the family sing Oonjal Pattu melodies. The older folks of family individually feed the couple milk and banana and favor them. Ladies from both the take three rounds around the couple both clockwise and anticlockwise with rice bowl and later toss shaded rice balls in four cardinal ways to avoid underhanded vitality.

Kanyadanam -

After oonjal the couple is taken to the mandap where the bride’s parents apply kajal to groom and washes his feet which signifies that the groom is a representative of Lord Vishnu. The bride then sits on her father’s lap with a coconut in her hand and her father offers the coconut to groom by supporting her hand while her mother pours holy water on their hands. By this ritual the parents of the bride transfer her responsibility to the groom for the rest of her life and accept the new union. This is the most inspiring custom when the lady sits on her dad lap and father gives her hand alongside coconut in the hand of the lucky man. This custom symbolizes a dad is giving his child a little girl who played in his lap and looking for the man of the hour's guarantee that he will consistently deal with her.

Muhurtham

The groom’s parents give the bride a traditional saree which is kept on her shoulder. Vermilion is applied on her hair parting by the groom after which she changes into the saree presented to her. Once she is back to the mandap thali (mangalsutra) is tied around her neck by the groom with two knots whereas the groom’s sister ties the final knot. After Kanyadanam, the husband to be's folks present the lady of the hour with a nine-yard silk saree symbolizing their acknowledgment of the lady of the hour into their family, trailed by use of Vermillion by the man of the hour to Bride's hair parting. The Thaali (proportional to mangalsutra) is honored by the minister and the groom ties the Thaali around the bride's neck. The initial two bunches of the Thaali is placed in by the man of the hour while the third and the last one is placed in by the man of the hour's sister.

Saptapadi -

The couple then hold hands and take seven rounds around the sacred fire while the priest chants mantras and tells them 7 vows which they need to follow throughout their married life. The vows represent their duties and responsibilities towards each other as husband and wife. The lady of the hour and the man of the hour hold each other's hands and circumvent the holy fire multiple times. Vedic mantras are recited by the priest which conveys the seven holy promises of marriage. This ceremonial denotes the emblematic start of the couple's excursion as husband and wife. Next, the man of the hour holds the lady of the hour's left toe as she ventures over a grindstone. This emblematically speaks to the robustness of their association.
